Thanks! This was exactly what I was looking for! I want to use tracking wide for when I try to photo small quick birds when the sky is the background and tracking expand spot for when the bird is not as quick moving and/or is a bit larger! :D This works! Now I dont have to go into the focus settings and switch between the two options all the time!

Thanks Charl for your insightful analysis. I've been to Etosha and Tanzania this year and used the Canon R5 and R6 with the RF 100-500 and the RF 800 lenses. Whilst I mainly photograph birds, I found this combination rather useful; the 800 is an under-appreciated lens - the glass is better than the newer RF 200-800 and it is very light and cheap! Ok - not so good if it overcast but just crank the ISO up - the R5 can cope. I was trying to get an RF 200-800 for the trip but failed and now am not so keen on that lens as its performance is not so good near its limit compared with the RF800 (I guess that's not really surprising). The R6 was probably the main issue - my tongue is hanging out for the R5 Mk2 and with this as my main camera and the Mk1 as #2, I would feel pretty set up for anything. That RF 70-200 F4 though is such a traveller's dream, I would probably throw that in too. I will make it to Pangolin within the next 3 years or so - Ecuador beckons for the next 2 ! Keep up the good work, Ted

I started with Nikonos II and a pair of Nikon F bodies in 1968 for under- and above-water PJ photography and used them until switching to Canon DSLR in 2004 with a 20D, EF-S 10-22mm, 24-70 2.8 L and 70-200mm 2.8 L. I upgraded to my body to the 50D in 2008 and that plus my good lenses met my needs until moving and deciding last year to to shoot wildlife stills and videos. I purchased an R6mkII, RF 100-500mm, RF 800 f/11 and EF-RF and EF-RF VND adapters. The RF 100-500mm is, I think, the perfect ‘walking around’ lens for birds and small animals. It is long enough to get good close-ups and wide enough to take shots which provide environmental context in the compositions. I purchased the 800mm because live on the Intracoastal Waterway and it allows me enough reach to photograph Herons, Egrets, Pelicans and porpoises from my back deck along with the boats which pass by (see the video slide shows on my channel) When shooting CLOG3 video at ISO 800 I find it much more convenient and the IQ just as good or better using my EF lenses with the VND adapter instead of placing VND on the end of the RF 100-500mm or RF 800mm. I even purchased a 2x teleconverter for my EF 70-200mm to give it more reach in videos. IQ Sharpness in videos shot at 24fps just isn’t as critical as it is with stills. The RF 200-800mm is a great lens for photographing wildlife but just not a good alternative to what I already have. Instead I invested my money in a second R6mkII when Canon discounted them to $1999 last month and now carry two of them X crosswise on my hips with either the RF 100-500mm and RF 800mm went focused on shooting stills and the RF 100-500mm on one and EF 24-70mm or EF 70-200mm with VND adapter when wanting to shoot videos and wider establishing shots. My EF-S 10-22mm also works in crop mode and 1080p video. I equipped both cameras with SmallRig cages which have A-S bases with QD socket. I equipped my two RF lenses with Kirk feet which also have QD socket and using Kirk QD swivels on my cross shoulder straps allows hanging the two R6mkII bodies by the lens feet in perfect balance or from the bottom of the cage when using shorter lenses.

I got joined by the wallet to Canon in 2004 when I went ‘all in” with a 8MP 20D with EF-S 10-22mm, 24-70 mm 2.8 L and 70-200mm 2.8L and a pair of 580ex flashes I used for non-professional PJ shooting for my church and at work when photo were needed. I last upgraded to a 15MP 50D in 2008 because it and my good glass more met may needs until last year when I decided to photograph bird and other small animals. My first step was to buy a 2X converter for the 70-200mm not expecting the IQ to be stellar but on par with a 200mm capture cropped and resized with some Photoshop mojo until Canon released the R6mkII which checked off all boxes for me. I initially used the R6mkII with my EF lenses to see how the added megapixels would affect results, using the Canon EF-RF adapter for stills and Meike VND adapter for Clog3 video. I then decided to buy the RF100-500mm, RF 800mm f/11 and most recently added a second R6mkII body. If planning to shoot only stills I carry the two R6mkll with the 100-500mm and 800mm. If planning on shooting stills and video I’ll use the 100-500mm on one body and used the Meike VND adapter and either the EF 24mm-70mm or EF 70-200mm. I don’t use the 2x converter with the 70-200mm unless I’m shooting video from a tripod. The EF-S 10-22mm mostly lives on the 50D for wide establishing shots but I have used it on the R6mkII with Meike VND for cropped 1080p videos. I started doing PJ work in 1971 with a pair of Nikon Fs with 35mm and 85mm lens suspended a strap attached just the right side and set-up both my R6mkII bodies with Small Rig cages which have QD swivel socket on the bottom. I added Kirk feet with QD sockets to the 100-500mm and 800mm and bought two cross shoulder straps X with Kirk QD swivels. This set-up gives me the option to suspect the camera and lens from the bottom of the cage or with the RF lenses the QD connector on the foot. I find it actually more comfortable carrying two cameras on each hip than one because the weight is distributed evenly.

We'll be joining you on Chobe safari next March. Although my EF 100-400mm II has been my go-to lens for wildlife for years, I'm considering the RF 100-500mm. However, your comment about inconsistent auto focus performance in lowlight situations concerns me. After 2+ years of experience with this lens, have your '1st impression' concerns remained about this lens?

Magnificent! Would love to photograph Pumas. I've been travelling to South America since the 1980's. I think you could easily combine Pumas with Southern Right Whales in Peninsula Valdes Argentina and Esteros Del Ibera Argentina(second largest wetlands after the Pantanal) Argentina, for birds and other wildlife. Rewilding Argentina has reintroduced Jaguars, Giant Otters and other wildlife that was historically found in Esteros Del Ibera as well.

Wow, nearly 700 comments by June 2024, maybe you should update this video with the latest gear? As a Nikon and Olympus user I did notice a few things. The stabilisation on Olympus gear is usually comfortably better than other brands, despite the quoted figures. The same goes for weather sealing. When did we see (in an advert) a water sprinkler blasting a Canon or Nikon body? We saw lots of pictures, but it was 25 mins before we saw a shot in really low light, so perhaps we are over emphasising this need. Finally, the new Nikon Z long lenses are more than half the price of the one you showed on the American website! That one also had a teleconverter built in (1.4X not 1.25X like the OM long zoom).

I completed a 6 day puma tracking trip in the same location in May, 2024. Your video perfectly captures the key questions and issues to consider for such a trip. We likewise were skeptical of going so far to photograph "just one species." I lived in Africa for 20 years and did many photographic trips there and around the world. Even so, Patagonia is now amongst our favorite locations. The pumas are stunning and the landscape is spectacular. And being able to get out and hike takes the whole experience to another level. As you note, one should be in decent shape to take this on - trying to keep up with a puma is not easy. Sure take the prime lens but a shorter zoom is absolutely essential (I used a 100-400 mm) to allow you to capture the pumas in their stunning environment. Great job on the video as it provides all the essential information, relevant and accurate tips on what gear to bring, and answers all the key questions one should consider for such a trip. Bravo!
